The roots of the University of Lucerne reach back to the year 1600.  However, we are a young law school; our first class of LL.B. students entered in 2001. UNILU now awards Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in law. We currently have a student body of about 1100 undergraduate and graduate students. We offer, in addition to the full curriculum that forms the core of these degree programs, particular expertise in fields such as trade and commercial law, international and European private law, commercial arbitration, comparative constitutional law, public international law/human rights law, international communications and art law, social security law, and foundations of law/jurisprudence.

The Chair of Comparative Law at the Law School houses a comprehensive program of global legal teaching and scholarship, including the present Academy.  Of particular pride is our Transnational Legal Studies Program, a Masters level program offering a variety of courses conducted in English and housing an extensive network of global partner universities with which the Law School has exchange programs for both students and faculty as well as various joint research programs. The program has three cornerstones:

Global scholarship represented by both a permanent faculty that is multilingual, globally educated, widely published, innovative and creative, and by distinguished guest professors who regularly teach classes and seminars to local and international students.

A global campus where we "mix" local and international students from day one within an expanding set of English-language, as well as internationally-focused, courses offered by Lucerne and visiting faculty throughout the year;

A global studies atmosphere is achieved through exposing our local students to language, legal terminology, and "legal thinking" classes during their undergraduate studies. They then are encouraged to undertake what amounts to a "semester abroad at home" by selecting primarily those advanced Masters level courses that are offered in English, after which, they are offered a semester or year abroad during their Masters studies at one of Lucerne’s partner universities. Last, Lucerne students will be actively supported should they wish to embark upon a full course of studies in order to earn an LL.M. degree or other postgraduate certification. The result is an emerging culture of internationalization, which incoming students will experience and benefit from.
